Find Your Perfect New Team Member With A Scorecard

Find Your Perfect New Team Member With A Scorecard

Most hiring processes are complicated, time-consuming, and expensive. The worst part? If you end up choosing the wrong-fit candidate or they leave sooner than expected, you’ll be back to square one (ouch!).

Instead, with a strategic scorecard to find the perfect team member, you automate, speed up, and improve your entire first screening, saving time and money by ONLY interviewing the right-fit candidates

A game-changer, isn’t it? So, here’s how you can do that with a ScoreApp quiz or readiness test.

How can a quiz help you source the right candidates?

A quiz helps you source the right candidate by taking the initial screening off your plate and optimising it. It eliminates those who wouldn’t be a good fit, identifies your top applicants and allows you to focus on the latter with your interviews.

For example, your scorecard angle could be “Are you the right fit to join the [company name] team?”

Using this type of pre-hire quiz or assessment will bring LOTS of benefits to your company:

  • Effective initial screening – Your quiz will filter out the candidates who don’t meet your minimum criteria or values and uncover those who do
  • Saving time – It’ll automate that whole initial screening for you, and you won’t need to conduct as many interviews (pheeew!)
  • Cutting costs – Faster and automated screening + fewer interviews = much lower hiring costs
  • Fair system – All the applicants go through the same quiz. So, by prioritising this initial automation and including objective criteria, you’ll remove biases and create a reliable and just hiring process
  • Real-time – With traditional tasks (like written tests or exercises), candidates have more time to prepare and could easily cheat. Because a quiz happens in real-time, on the other hand, you can assess their actual skills and knowledge as well as their quick thinking
  • Versatile Hiring quizzes offer so many possibilities! You can tailor them to match any industry and requirements, from technical skills to sector-specific knowledge and questions to gauge a cultural fit
  • Scalable – You can handle larger volumes of applications without significant expenses
  • Valuable experience – Quizzes offer an interactive and engaging experience for the candidates themselves, which can have a positive impact on their perception of your company. If you wish to go one step further, set up your scorecard so that it gives them instant feedback on their performance, too (we’ll share some tips on that soon!)
  • Choosing better employees that stay longer – Companies using pre-hire assessments benefit from 36% higher employee retention and 39% lower turnover!

Creating a scorecard to find the right new team member

Now that you know how much quicker and cheaper it is to use a scorecard, would you rather go back to doing that initial screen manually? No? Smart!

Then, let’s walk you through exactly how to put your scorecard together so that it helps you find the perfect employee for that role.

Identify what you’re looking for in a new team member

A generic set of questions won’t cut it. For your scorecard to work like an HR charm, you must first get strategic and specific.

Set clear goals and define the role in detail

Start from this and then work your way backwards to get clear on your ideal candidate. For example:

  • How can this role align with the current team structure and dynamics?
  • What is (and isn’t) required of them?
  • How will this role and new hire feed into our overall company goals?

Define the right-fit employee for that role

Once you’re crystal clear on that role and its place within your company, it becomes much easier to visualise your perfect applicant.

Of course, this will depend on a multitude of factors such as your sector, type of business, and role. However, some popular criteria you might want to consider are:

  • Cultural fit – With your quiz, find out if a candidate’s values, beliefs, and behaviours align with those that characterise your company
  • Skills – Figure out if they possess the soft and hard skills required to embrace this role and become a positive addition to their team
  • Experience – By asking questions about an applicant’s previous roles and background, you can immediately work out if they have the right experience for this new position
  • Education – If relevant, define which degrees, diplomas, and qualifications would make someone the perfect fit for that role

Planning strategic scorecard questions

Now that you have a clear picture of those ideal candidates, it’s time to map out the right questions to identify them through your quiz—all automatically!

Focus on different categories

Make sure your quiz tackles all the hiring criteria that matter to you. To get you started, here are some question ideas to:

  • Figure out whether or not someone would be a good cultural fit – “Which of the following values do you live by in your professional and personal life?” and “Describe a time when you had to collaborate with a colleague whose working style was different from yours. How did you ensure a successful outcome?”
  • Test their skills – “Which of these methods would you use to measure the success of a social media campaign?” or “What Excel formula would you use to summarise monthly data for revenue and profit respectively on a quarterly basis?”
  • Understand their previous experience and background – “Have you ever worked as a [type of role] before?” or “What were your primary responsibilities in your current or last job?”
  • Identify if they possess the relevant qualifications for that position – “How do you think your education has prepared you to meet the challenges of this role?” or “Which of these industry-specific qualifications do you possess?”

Keep it varied and straightforward

Use a mixture of question formats to create an engaging and valuable test (for example, some open-text questions will allow your candidates to go more in-depth).

At the same time, consider prioritising those that are quick to answer and review, like yes/no and single or multiple choice.

Decide whether you’re going to include instant feedback and results, too

This quiz must complement your hiring process. So, it’s entirely up to you! To give you an idea, though, you could include:

  • Different sets of results to show your applicants how they scored in each category (especially those with right-or-wrong questions) and how much they match your company culture
  • Clear messages to tell them exactly what’s going to happen next, setting the right expectations (for example, if someone’s answers don’t reflect your non-negotiables, you can communicate it automatically through their quiz results)

This will save both your and their time, manage your applicants’ expectations, and create a premium experience right from the start, enhancing their perception of your company.

Assessing potential candidates against your criteria

Once you’ve created your strategic ScoreAp quiz:

  • Ask all your candidates to complete it to find out whether or not they can move to the next stage of your hiring process
  • Use your quiz analytics to look at their answers and evaluate your candidates
  • Only set up interviews with those who match your ideal candidate profile. Easy!
